Asparagus Setaceus Plumosus

Asparagus setaceus ‘Plumosus’, the Asparagus Fern, is not a true fern at all but a member of the asparagus family that produces flat, horizontal sprays of needle-fine, bright green foliage arranged in layered tiers. The effect is cloud-like and delicate, and the plant has a graceful, airy quality that makes it a favourite for adding texture to a plant collection. It is tougher than it looks, tolerating a range of conditions and bouncing back quickly from neglect.

Origins

Native to southern and eastern Africa, Asparagus setaceus grows in forest margins and open woodland, scrambling through surrounding vegetation using small hooked thorns on its stems.

Soil and Substrate

Our Simply Houseplant Tropical Potting Mixprovides a well-draining, peat-free blend that suits this species well. Water regularly, keeping the substrate lightly moist but not waterlogged. Bright, indirect light produces the densest, greenest growth, though it tolerates some shade.
