Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa SEEDS

Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa seeds grow into the broadleaf hopbush a widely distributed, evergreen shrub native to the subtropical biome of coastal and inland Australia, and also naturally present across tropical Africa, Madagascar, India, South-East Asia and the Americas, making it one of the most widely distributed of all woody plant species. Described by Jacq. (Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin, 17271817). The epithet viscosa means ‘sticky’ (from Latin), referring to the resinous coating on leaves and twigs. This is the typical, broader-leaved subspecies of the species. Produces the characteristic winged, papery seed capsules of the genus that turn pink-red as they ripen. A fast-growing, drought-tolerant, wind-resistant shrub used widely in tropical and subtropical horticulture and land stabilisation. Family Sapindaceae.

Full sun; well-drained soils; drought-tolerant; subtropical to tropical conditions. Fast-growing; wind-resistant; excellent for erosion control.

Dodonaea viscosa subsp. viscosa the broadleaf hopbush is one of the most widely distributed woody plant species in the world, its natural occurrence across tropical Australia, Africa, Asia and the Americas reflecting exceptional ecological flexibility; its fast growth, drought tolerance and wind resistance make it a valued species for horticulture, windbreaks and land stabilisation across the subtropical and tropical world.
