Leucophyllum frutescens – 5-15cm

Leucophyllum frutescens, often celebrated as a true jewel of arid landscapes, is a dense, evergreen shrub native to the dry regions of Texas and northern Mexico. Its fine, silvery-grey foliage is covered in tiny, velvety hairs that shimmer under sunlight, giving it a luminous, almost ethereal quality. During the heat and humidity that precede rain, this plant bursts into a stunning display of lavender to violet trumpet-shaped flowers, creating a vibrant contrast with its silvery leaves. Known as the barometer bush due to its uncanny ability to bloom in anticipation of storms, Leucophyllum frutescens forms a rounded, compact silhouette that can reach up to 2.5 meters in height and width. Its natural drought tolerance, resilience to poor soils, and low-maintenance character make it not just a practical choice for xeriscaping but also a striking architectural presence in gardens. The foliage maintains its striking color year-round, while the flowers appear sporadically throughout the warm months, often in sudden, breathtaking bursts of color.
