The sage cultivar of choice for culinary pursuits, this variety is known as ‘broad leaf sage’ for its large (up to 10cm), elliptical to oval grey-green leaves. It is an evergreen sub shrub with woody stems and a compact mounding habit, useful as a tidy addition to perennial plantings as well as the productive garden. Rarely flowering, it makes a striking foliage feature with the varied angle of the leaves producing a range of colours from bright green to silver tones, aging to soft downy grey. The name ‘Berggaten’ translates to ‘mountain garden’, referencing the area in which it was grown on a German estate.
